Recognized today as the symbol of the Borough of Queens, the Unisphere was constructed for and served as the centerpiece of the 1964/65 New York World’s Fair. Floating atop its pedestal, the glistening stainless steel Unisphere weighs and incredible 700,000 lbs. and is the largest representation of Earth on the planet. Designed by landscape architect Gilmore D. Clarke, this massive sculpture represents the very essence of the Space-Age – orbital paths encircling the globe. You may remember the Unisphere from the original Men in Black movie when the alien roach crashed its spacecraft through it.
In June 2014 researchers from the University of Central Florida and CyArk traveled to Flushing Meadows-Corona Park to conduct laser scans of structures pertaining to the 1964/65 New York World’s Fair.
