We have launched a new page for you to explore some of the MemoryMarkers that were developed for the MemoryScan project.
While the Holiday Inn sign was ubiquitous throughout the US at the time. It is of special importance to Cocoa Beach and Project Mercury. Innkeeper Henri Landwirth came to Cocoa Beach to manage the Starlite Motel and then transitioned to the Holiday Inn. It was Landwirth who had a life-size Mercury space capsule cake created to celebrate John Glenn’s orbital flight. Unfortunately, the cake had to remain in a cooled truck, as the flight experienced two delays and finally launched on February 20, 1962. When Glenn returned to Cocoa Beach and the Cape for a parade on February 23, the now stale cake was served.
Special thank you to artists Eric Imperiale and Nitin Bakshi for their work in developing these assets.
